Pot with traditional Mata Ortiz fish and heron designs, handmade and painted by first-generation artist Gloria Hernandez.
She was born on December 20, 1958, in Colonia Cuauhtémoc Chihuahua México, and arrived in Mata Ortiz Chihuahua in 1975 when she married Gregorio Silveira Ortiz, born July 31, 1955. After learning from his older brother, Rogelio Silveira Ortiz, he teaches Gloria the pottery trade. However, Gloria quickly develops her own style, innovating in designs of animals, spiders, insects, fish, reptiles, birds, human figures, petroglyphs, and intricate geometric drawings that fascinate the viewer's gaze.
Gloria has also been a pillar for the continuation of the ceramic tradition in the town, teaching, among many others, her children Fabiola Silveira Hernández (April 19,977), Gregorio Silveira Hernández (October 21, 1978), Jesús Antonio Silveira Hernández (April 19,982), and Estrella Silveira Hernández (May 13,989). Her granddaughters Lesly Samantha Silveira Hernández (January 18, 2003) and Crisol Garibay Silveira are already part of the third generation of Potters. Together they all continue to sow the seeds of this tradition in the family's youngest members.
