This handmade print of Saint Elzéar of Sabran was created using traditional etching and aquatint techniques on a zinc plate. Saint Elzéar (1285–1323) was a French nobleman and Count of Ariano in the Kingdom of Naples. Known for his commitment to justice and compassion, he governed his lands with fairness, earning the respect of his peers and subjects. Despite his noble status, Elzéar led a life of piety and austerity alongside his wife, Blessed Delphina of Glandèves, with whom he made a mutual vow of chastity. He was a patron of the poor and a defender of the Church during a period of political instability in Europe. Elzéar was canonized in 1369 by Pope Urban V, who was also a relative of his.

This artwork combines historical artistry with modern craftsmanship to commemorate his life and legacy. The town of San Elizario in El Paso County, Texas, is named in honor of Saint Elzéar, reflecting the deep historical and cultural connections between Catholic saints and the early Spanish settlements in the region. Originally established as a presidio (military fort) in the late 18th century, San Elizario served as a key waypoint along the Camino Real, a vital trade and missionary route.

About the artist:

Sergio Alfonso Rodriguez Garcia

(Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico. 1983)

His work responds to an exploration of a formal and thematic nature, which he defines through painting and graphics with everyday elements, plant forms or landscapes.

The figurative aspect of his work, quite attached to tradition, accentuates a certain tension between the prosaic and the metaphysical.
