Martin Cota
Born in Mata Ortiz, Chihuahua in 1976, Martin Cota is a second-generation potter. He began learning in the late 90s from his older brother, Gerardo. His interest in pottery sparked when he was a young boy growing up around the likes of first-generation potter Juan Quezada. He is the cousin of Laura Bugarini, one of the most recognized female potters in Mata Ortiz.
Martin identifies his style as Paquime style and is known for his minimalist designs, and use of traditional colors black and red over white clay. His pottery often has an unusual and unique form that distinguishes him from other potters. Cota often uses a mixed media approach by adding wood, metal, and other materials to his pieces.
